Configuring ssh for public key authentication

$ ssh-keygen -t ecdsa -b 384      //create public and private key on CLIENT
$ mkdir ~/.ssh
$ chmod 0700 ~/.ssh
$ scp  <public key>  user@host:/home/$USER/.ssh/authorized_keys   //this will overwrite the authorized_keys file
$ chmod 0600 ~/.ssh/authorized_keys

Put the following in ~/.ssh/config

Host <shortname>
        HostName <fqdn>
        User <username>
        IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ecdsa
