Edge Service Gateway (ESG)

The NSX Edge Service Gateway is a multi-function virtual appliance that provides common network services, including routing, perimeter firewall, Network Address Translation (NAT), Load Balancing, VPN, DHCP Server, DHCP Relay, and DNS Relay.

The primary goal behind the ESG is to provide real time instantiation of these services so that software defined network environments can provide not only the core network services of switching and routing, but also the additional network services that create a fully functioning environment.
